Games like LinkedIn Queens: unlimited star-placement puzzles

LinkedIn’s Queens asks you to place one crown in every row, every column and every coloured region so that no two crowns touch, not even diagonally. It is quick, addictive, and limited to one puzzle per day.

What kind of puzzle Queens is

Queens is a one-star Star Battle, a puzzle type that has existed in logic-puzzle magazines for decades. The classic version uses two stars per row; LinkedIn’s uses one, which makes it faster. The “no touching” rule is what turns it from a placement exercise into a deduction puzzle: every crown you place removes up to eight neighbours plus a whole row, column and region.

A good Queens-style puzzle has exactly one solution and can be finished by pure elimination. If you ever have to guess, the puzzle is badly made.

Techniques that solve every puzzle

  1. Start with the smallest region. A region of two or three cells has almost no options. Whatever its star can’t be, mark ✕.
  2. Row and column containment. If a region fits entirely inside one row, that row’s star must be in that region, so every other cell in the row is ✕. The same holds for columns.
  3. Two regions, two rows. If two regions are both confined to the same two rows, those rows are “used up”: every cell in them outside the two regions is ✕.
  4. Neighbour elimination. After placing a star, ✕ all eight neighbours. Combined with row, column and region elimination, this usually forces the next star.
  5. Count what is left. A row with one remaining non-✕ cell has its star. Repeat.

Regions is DailyLogic’s version of this puzzle. Same rules, one star per row, column and coloured region, no touching. Differences from LinkedIn’s Queens:
